Big Squaw

The little ski resort of Big Squaw Ski Mountain sits on the shores of Moosehead Lake in northern Maine. In 1963, a T-Bar that went up 600 vertical feet opened there. Classic New England runs are how the slopes have been described. The resort caters to families and provides a fantastic environment for snowsport enthusiasts. Beginners, intermediates, and specialists alike will find terrain that suits their skill level on the slopes. It also features restrooms, a guest service desk, and a small rental and repair store.

Since 2004, access to the mountain’s top regions has been restricted. James Confalone, the property’s current owner, has been accused of engaging in unlawful logging activities on the premises. The state also filed a lawsuit against Confalone, requiring him to repair the resort. This was because it had been determined that he had not been keeping up with necessary maintenance. In December 2021, he will have to pay a sizable fine and restitution for the harm he caused.

Confalone acquired the resort in 1995. Beginning in 2005, the corporation ran the ski resort on a part-time basis until its final closure in 2010. Prior to its decline, this was Maine’s premier ski resort. Unfortunately, it had to close due to a broken lift and the owners’ neglect.
